Roger’s Chocolates have been made and sold in this store for over 100 years.
Charles Rogers was originally a Grocery merchant who stocked chocolate from San Francisco. Recognizing the popularity of this decadent treat he started brewing up his own batch in the back of his Grocery store and created the now iconic “Victoria Cream” and became Canada’s first Chocolatier in 1885. With his wife Leah running the retail store they built a thriving business and opened their new shop at 913 Government Street in 1903.
The shop is a beautiful historic part of Victoria’s past and a wonderful example of Queen Anne style architecture and an Art Nouveau interior decor with Rich wood paneling, intricate stained glass and cast iron element, Mosaic tiled floors and be sure to take note of the stunning light fixtures originating from Paris.
The staff at Rogers are passionate about their Chocolates, the shop and the historic legacy the Mr. Charles “Candy” Rogers and Leah Morrison (his wife) have left in our charming city.
Today, the shop is filled with traditional recipes such as the Victoria Cream and new scrumptious morsels like Sea Salted Caramels (my personal favorite), packaged in beautifully painted tins of Canadian art or the traditional burgundy box with white ribbon.
They say there are some Ghostly stories to tell but I’ll let you discover that for yourselves.
